You and I call it a beauty spot. Cindy Crawford has one over her lip! In reality, it is a mole. No harm, actually a mole is just an unwanted growth of skin cells. They can be black or brown in colour. And you won’t find moles only on face. They can be seen anywhere on the body. Moles start off in childhood days, and stay on as you grow. But some of you might hate the very impression of a mole sitting on glowing clear skin.

Let us go through the “mole” business – causes, types and then home remedies to do away with them.

What Causes Unwanted Moles

Moles happen when cells grow in a cluster form, rather than spreading throughout the skin. These cells are called ‘melanocytes’, and darken after they are exposed to sun in the teenage years, and pregnancy as well. But relax, they are not cancerous, they are just benign (meaning harmless).

Did you know, it is common to have 10 to 40 moles by adulthood? Sometimes, hair can be seen in moles. But, that’s ok. There is no need to press panic buttons. In fact, some moles also fade away with time. Is there only one kind of a mole, or are there more? Let us find out.

Types Of Moles

The moles present at birth are called Congenital nevi scientifically. They are found in 1 in 100 people and are likely to turn cancerous, as compared to moles which happen after birth.

Dysplastic nevi are moles that are larger than the average size and are irregular shape wise. Plus, they have an uneven color, with centers in dark brown color and lighter uneven edges. As it so happens, these nevi are likely to become cancerous. So if there are any changes in a mole, do get them checked by a dermatologist to find out any likelihood of skin cancer.

Now let us know the types of home remedies we have:

Natural Remedies To Remove Moles From Your Body Or Face:

So, here we go finding the battery of home remedies that can help remove moles. You can apply them on moles found on any part of your body – cheeks, shoulders, chest, abdomen, arms, legs etc. but make sure you do not have sensitive skin (or else it will end up reacting to the natural remedies you apply).

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

What you need:

  • ACV
  • Bowl
  • Cotton ball or paper towel.

How to prepare: Pour a few drops of ACV into a bowl.

How to apply:

  1. Dip a cotton ball (or paper towel) in the solution.
  2. Apply it to the moles on your face or body (as the case maybe).
  3. Leave it overnight.
  4. Repeat this daily for 10 days minimum.

Why this works: When you apply raw and organic ACV to a mole on a daily basis, you will find them fall off in some time, because of the acidic content in it which scabs the mole and makes it fall off.

Caution: In the initial few days, ACV application can make the mole go worse. Not to worry….it takes a week’s time for it to get better. Apply coconut oil, if you see a scar.

2. Pineapple And Sea Salt

What you need:

  • Pineapple juice (fresh)
  • Some sea salt (optional)

How to prepare: Extract juice from a fresh pineapple.

How to apply:

  1. Put cotton ball soaked in pineapple juice on your mole.
  2. Let it stay overnight or until the time the juice dries up.
  3. Repeat this process several times a day, or for a couple of weeks, till the moles start to fade.

Why this works: The citric acid in pineapple helps dissolve moles, whereas the sea salt sheds off the dried skin layer, thereby revealing smoother skin underneath.

Caution: Try and use fresh pineapple juice, as it has more of citric acid. If that is not available, you can try for other juices like grapefruit, sour apple and lemons.

3. Sour Apple Juice

What you need:

Having explored the natural remedies, how about checking out other options – mole removal creams, for instance.

Mole Removal Creams: Are They Effective?

For some it is a beauty spot, for others it is an ‘ugly spot’. Dermatologists use a scalpel to remove the mole, which is a common method of mole removal. But it can lead to scar formation, which you could call, is the biggest drawback.

There are topical creams for mole removal – which contain bloodroot, a form of acid which dissolves the mole. But that might need repeated applications. Do not expect a miracle that the moles will vanish away with the creams. The success of it depends on the size of the mole.

Are there any preventive methods which can nip the problem? Let us find out.

Prevention

Here are a few preventive methods to keep moles at bay:

  1. Limit Sun Exposure: The one way in which you can lower the risk of developing moles is to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Try and limit the sun exposure during the peak hours – such as from 10 am to 3pm.
  2. Sunscreen: One of the ways to avoid moles (in case of sensitive skins) is by wearing a sunscreen with SPF of 30 or more.
  3. Monitor: Keep a self-skin check. This will help you monitor for new mole growth, if any.
  4. Exfoliation: Daily exfoliation is a good way of preventing moles in the first place.

When To Visit A Doctor

Monthly examination is a must to detect the presence of moles, and skin changes.

Surgical Procedures By A Qualified Medical Professional

First of all, the surgeon will have to find out the size of the border. There are 3 surgical methods used to remove moles: Shave excision, punch biopsy, and excisional surgery. There is laser method of mole removal too.
