Tanned skin does not go well with the Indian skin tone. Due to a naturally wheatish or a slightly darker skin tone, exposure to the harsh sunlight can cause tanning, which looks uneven and patchy. So how do you treat this? A large number of products in the market claim to be effective in skin lightening but most often than not they just lighten your pockets. Instead, here are some simple home remedies you can try to get naturally fairer looking skin.
Let’s learn the different ways to whiten the skin tone.
1. Citric Juices
Citrus fruits are natural bleaching agents and applying it on your skin can help create a fairer skin tone. Squeeze out the juice from a lime or orange and soak some cotton balls in it. Apply this on your skin and leave it on for just a few minutes before rinsing it off. Make sure to apply a moisturiser after rinsing off as the juices can tend to dry out the skin. Besides the bleaching action, it also contains Vitamin C which slows down the cells that cause skin darkening through excess production of melanin.
2. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is an excellent lubricant and has many nourishing properties. When applied to the skin, it is absorbed right through the layers and gives a glow to the skin by nourishing it from within. Another way to speed up the process is to cut open a small capsule of Vitamin E and pour the liquid into some coconut oil. Apply this mixture as a night moisturiser on your skin before going to bed and wake up to beautiful looking, soft, supple and fairer skin. Alternatively you can also try this with almond oil.
3. Exfoliate
Sometimes accumulation of dust and pollution in our pores dulls down the skin and also causes it to darken because of the impurities. So it is very important to regularly exfoliate. One of the best and natural ways to exfoliate the skin is with a homemade sugar scrub. Take some sugar, olive oil and natural rose petals and add them to a mixer. Whip it well so the sugar crystals are well powdered and won’t damage the skin. The oil should also mix well without leaving a layer on top. The properties of rose petals are known world-wide to help in skin treatments. Use this scrub at least once or twice a week. It can be stored and used all over the body to reduce skin darkening.
4. Face Packs
Take some sandalwood powder and make it into a paste by mixing it with some water or even milk. Apply this pack to the skin and leave it on to dry and then rinse it off. Apply this once a week.
You can also apply a pack made of neem leaves (or try the Himalaya neem face pack).
Another great face pack is to make a mixture of gram flour and very little turmeric. The mixture can be stored and a little can be used daily. Mix a small amount with little water or milk and apply to the face and body. This is an age old Indian practice to help people easily lighten skin. This mixture can also be used daily as a natural face wash.
5. Be Like Queen Cleopatra
Cleopatra was known to have milky white skin. And her secret behind that – she bathed with pure milk. Now that is a luxury we do not have today. So instead fill up the bath tub with water, and then add about a mug full of milk and mix it well so it spreads throughout the tub. Squeeze the juice of an entire lemon into the bath water. Then soak yourself in the bath tub and just relax. This will naturally lighten your skin.
6. Almond Paste
Almonds are also said to have lightening and nourishing properties. Soak some almonds in milk overnight. In the morning, take them out and grind them to a paste. Add a spoonful of the milk used to soak the almonds to the paste, and apply it all over the face. Wash it off after twenty minutes. Do this regularly and you will soon begin to see great results.
7. Tomato Juice
People often use tomatoes to get rid of the stubborn colours after Holi. Why? Because tomatoes are strong bleaching agents and remove impurities while leaving the skin soft and supple. Mash up a tomato and add a few drops of lemon juice to it. Apply this to the skin and wash it off after a few minutes to get natural skin whitening at home.
Try out some of these remedies and find out which suits you best. But remember the key to getting fairer skin is patience. None of these will work miraculously overnight. You need to be regular and consistent and you will soon begin to see great results of whitened and great healthy skin. Also, always remember to put on sun screen before you step out to protect your skin from the harsh UV rays. Some damages cannot be reversed. It’s better to be careful instead.
