Highlighting and contouring have taken the makeup world by storm, but there’s no denying it’s an easy task for everyone. Grasping the technique of this face shaping trend can be tricky, especially for the less skilled. The beauty of contouring and highlighting is that when done correctly, the shading and illuminating tricks can literally transform the shape of your face. Now I am not saying you need to enhance the shape of your face, but it is pretty handy to know how to create the illusion of cheekbones!
Contouring and highlighting makes such a huge difference to your makeup. It makes your face look thinner and it also defines and enhances your features.
I will show you how to slim your face, enhance your favorite features, and play with proportion—all with makeup. Optical illusions, indeed.
Apply your foundation all over your face
After cleaning and moisturizing your skin, apply your foundation all over your face using a foundation brush or your fingers. Don’t worry about varsity-level coverage. It’s simply about creating a uniform base.
I usually use Covergirl & Olay Tone Rehab 2-in-1 Foundation. The team up between Covergirl and Olay provide a fantastic and inexpensive option for someone who wants great skin. The foundation has more of a matte finish and is great for skin that feels dry and tight without creating those gross patches of dry skin. I really like that this is a dual purpose foundation that tones my face while also providing coverage of it at the same time. I always have problems trying to find a perfect match but this is brilliant. Plus, it stays on for the whole day rather than seeping through your skin. I would recommend this to anyone.
Contour your face
The contour step includes using two stick foundations: one that’s two shades deeper than your overall color, and one that’s two shades lighter. With the darker of the two stick foundations, trace the temples. If you have a larger forehead, carry straight into the hairline to minimize it.
To bring out your cheekbones, find the hollow part by placing your fingers on the sides of your face, and where you feel it dip underneath the bones, just above is where you place your pigment. With the nose, you can go a little bit narrower at the tip or you can carry it into the brow if you have a shorter nose to add length or width.
Blending is the most important beauty step
Take a damp beautyblender and tap over the area of the contour color, merging it into your base foundation. Tap in small circular motions using the bigger, rounded end of the beautyblender because it has more space.
Blend any excess product with a dampbeautyblender
Concentrate the lighter foundation stick underneath your eyes. You can do a little bit in the center of the forehead and on the chin, and the bridge of the nose. Blend any excess product with a damp beautyblender.
With a fluffy brush, dust the entire face with loose powder
With a fluffy brush, dust the entire face with loose powder. Translucent is best for securing a cream foundation like Covergirl & Olay Tone Rehab 2-in-1. Foundation is an actual must-have for perfect-looking skin and it is the most important makeup item.
Now the face has a little bit of sculpt and shape to it, it’s the perfect base to start building up with brows, eye shadow and lips. Highlighting and contouring are two artsy tricks that can magically enhance your cheek bones and creating a flattering bone structure and movie lighting. Try these steps and let me know how it goes.
