Double chin—that unattractive saggy sac under the chin that some of us are cursed with. Now that selfies are taking over facebook and Instagram, double chins are a point of concern. If you suffer from double chin, then you know how difficult it is just to take a decent selfie where you’re double chin is not so obvious.

What Causes a Double Chin?

More often than not, a double chin is a result of weight gain or a result of aging. But in some instances, it can also simply be genetic. Well, whatever the cause, there are some exercises that you can follow to get rid of double chin. Even if you don’t have double chin, you can still try these exercises as they also help to avoid ending up with double chin.

Jaw Release

Sit or stand up with your spine in a straight position. Now move your jaw up and down as if you’re chewing, while keeping your mouth closed. Breathe in and out slowly while doing this. Once you exhale, open up your mouth as wide as you can and press your tongue against the back of your lower teeth. Breathe in and out in this position making an “Aah” sound. Repeat the entire exercise five more times. This exercise is aimed at stretching and toning the facial muscles to help prevent or get rid of double chin.

Chin Lift

Stand or sit up straight and tilt your neck upwards toward the ceiling. Now pucker up your lips as much as you can, like as if you’re kissing the ceiling. Hold this position for five seconds and then return back to your original position. Repeat this exercise ten times. This exercise helps stretch the neck and chin, toning them up.

Stick Out Your Tongue

Open your mouth as wide as possible and stick out your tongue as far as you can. Hold this position for ten seconds. Return back to normal and repeat the exercise. Do this for ten times every day. This exercise pulls the muscles in your chin, making them firmer.

Chin Slapping

This exercise involves slapping your chin with just the right amount of pressure. Use the back of your hand to slap under your chin. Make sure the slaps are firm but not too hard and slowly build up the speed as you go. Do this for a couple of minutes two to three times a day.

Neck Roll

As the name suggests, this exercises involves rolling your neck. Sit up straight and turn your neck towards one side of your shoulder. Slowly start rolling your neck from shoulder to chest to the other side of the shoulder to the back. All the while make sure to breathe in and out slowly. Repeat this ten times, doing it five times in each direction.

Tilt Your Head

Sit up straight and slowly tilt your head as far back as you can. Hold the position for five seconds. Repeat this exercise ten times every day. Just make sure to keep your movements slow and gentle as jerky movements could lead to sprains or muscle cramps.
While you’re tilting your head back, make an ‘O’ while keeping your mouth closed. This will add more tension to your chin and neck muscles and make for a harder exercise. Repeat this ten times, holding the ‘O’ for five seconds each time.

Tongue Press

A variation of the tilt-your-head exercise is the tongue press. Sit up straight and tilt your head back to look up at the ceiling. Firmly press your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Now tilt your heard forward, towards your chest. Tilt is as far as possible while keeping your back and shoulders erect. Hold this position for five seconds. Repeat this exercise ten times. When you do this exercise, you will feel your chin tighten, which means that it is getting worked out.

You can also massage your chin and neck daily. Make this a part of your morning routine. Right after you brush your time, massage your chin and neck with firm strokes; the idea is to encourage circulation and keep the muscles toned.

These exercises are quite simple and can easily be worked into your daily schedule. So you don’t have to fret anymore about trying to find the right angle and lighting for a selfie so that your double chin doesn’t look too obvious. And you don’t have to spend hours doing your makeup, trying to camouflage it either. All you need to do is to do these exercises regularly and you’ll be rid of that double chin in no time.
