At the culmination of tonight’s two hour-long live broadcast, Miss North Dakota, Cara Mund, was crowned the new Miss America, taking over from Miss America 2017, Savvy Shields. This is the first time Miss North Dakota has ever won the much-coveted tiara!

Mund successfully navigated a stacked field of contestants this year, and a new twist in this year’s proceedings — the DOUBLE Q&A round; one light hearted, the second political. (Across both her questions, she literally told the judges the #1 item on her bucket list was advancing through the Miss America semi-finals for the win, and later astutely rebuked President Trump’s decision to remove the U.S. from the Paris Agreement.) It was intense, but also a good fun pageant time. Prior to that, she successfully wore both a bikini and an evening gown then, in the talent round, she ~jazz~ danced to a Michael Jackson classic while wearing a tuxedo jacket and a fedora.

Behind Mund, the 2018 Miss America top 5 contestants are as follows: first runner-up, Miss Missouri, second runner-up, Miss New Jersey, third runner-up, Miss District of Columbia, and fourth runner-up, Miss Texas.
