Roman philosopher and politician Cicero believed that “if you have a garden and a library you have everything you need.” If you would like to test the credence of this statement, you don’t have to have a big backyard or live in a house at all – even the smallest of balconies will be enough. To help you out, we are sharing numerous gardening ideas that will add life even to the smallest of spaces. But feel free to add your own inventiveness to these ideas, because as an ancient Chinese proverb says, “all gardeners know better than other gardeners.”
1. From a broken laundry basket…
… to a beautiful planter! All you need is a laundry basket, some burlap, a rope, and some hot glue.
2. Have a seat
Don’t throw away your old furniture. You can upgrade old chairs into welcoming planters that are perfect for any porch.
3. They look fancy…
…but they’re actually rope-wrapped tin cans! This is a great upcycling project that is environmentally friendly and easy enough for kids to do.
4. Can you guess the origin of this planter?
It looks like vintage glassware, but it’s actually an overhead light cover. Update an old cover with a coat of acrylic or spray paint to give them a new lease of life.
5. A pan for your lawn
Take a small loaf pan and give it a facelift with some white chalk paint. Use a letter stamp and black ink to add a cute message to your new planter. Find some wooden balls, paint them gold and use liquid nails adhesive to secure them to the bottom of the pan. Don’t forget to drill some holes in the bottom of the pan to allow water drainage!

This gumball planter is perfect for an indoor terrarium! Find an old gumball machine, place a small piece of cardboard inside it where the gumballs come out so your gravel stays in place. Spoon in gravel in the color of your choice and add air plants or succulents.

15. Tie the knot
If your father likes gardening, this quirky planter would be a perfect Father’s Day gift. Cut a small slit near the bottom of the tie. Ensure that the slit only goes through the first layer of the fabric (don’t cut the tie’s filling) to create a pocket. Create a triangular lining for the pocket out of felt and sew the sides up, leaving the top open. Use the corner of a sandwich bag to make a plastic shell for the felt lining. Place the felt and the plastic shell inside the tie pocket, secure it with a few stitches and you are ready to plant!
