I’m not a really big fan of certain supplements, like multivitamins for example; I think they make for some ridiculously expensive urine. I won’t go into too much detail now, however I will say that I believe we should be focusing on supplementing our diets with elements that are lacking in our plates.

Of course this varies from person to person, but I don’t think I’m alone when I say this: I don’t eat enough fish.

According to Mayo Clinic, at least 2 servings of fatty fish a week is recommended. That’s because fish and krill contain high sources of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which provide many health benefits to humans. Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are so incredibly important to us for the reasons I listed below, and it is unfortunate that our diets naturally lack their primary source.

For readers who do not eat meat, there is another source of Omega-3 found in flaxseed, chia, hemp, and a few other foods. These sources offer alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), which is converted inside the body into EPA and DHA but in smaller amounts.

For every reader who, like me, doesn’t consume fish twice a week, here is a list of 6 reasons why you should take Omega-3 supplements:

6 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE OMEGA-3 SUPPLEMENTS

#1 – INCREASES YOUR LIFESPAN THROUGH A HEALTHY HEART

Studies have shown that Omega-3 fatty acids help prevent the following dangerous and often fatal conditions:

  • Abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias;
  • Blood clots;
  • Atherosclerosis, or the buildup of fat deposits in major heart vessels;
  • Hypertension, or high blood pressure;
  • Inflammation

Omega-3 fats also regulates cholesterol levels. Some studies show that fish and krill oils are just as effective at reducing cholesterol as statins, a class of drugs that help lower cholesterol.

#2 – FIGHTS ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION

Many studies show that consuming Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA, can prevent depression and anxiety.³ Both EPA and DHA keep the dopamine levels in your brain high; low dopamine causes many negative symptoms including lack of motivation and depression. One study found EPA is as equally effective as Prozac in treating depressive symptoms.

#3 – REDUCES ADHD SYMPTOMS IN CHILDREN

Several studies have discovered that children with ADHD have lower blood levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, in comparison to their peers. Omega-3s have been proven to help improve inattention and the ability to complete tasks, as well as decrease hyperactivity, impulsiveness, restlessness and aggression.

#4 – COMBATS AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES

Omega-3 fatty acids have been proven effective in fighting several autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, Lupus and psoriasis.

#5 – IMPROVES BONE AND JOINT HEALTH

Omega-3, or more accurately EPA and DHA, have shown to improve bone strength by increasing the amount of calcium in bones. For that reason, Omega-3 reduces the risk of osteoporosis and may also help manage arthritis. Patients taking omega-3 supplements in a study have reported reduced joint pain and increased grip strength.

#6 – ALLEVIATES MENSTRUAL CRAMPS

Studies have frequently shown that women who consume Omega-3 fatty acids on a regular basis have milder, more tolerable menstrual pain. One study even found that Omega-3 supplements were more effective than ibuprofen in treating severe pain during menstruation.
